The December 2021 Annual Women's issue of The Network Marketing Magazine topic is the Value of Nurturing. Nurturing, according to the Merriam-Wester Dictionary, is defined as "the care and attention given to someone or something that is growing and developing. This is an extremely appropriate and timely topic.

Network Marketers and all organizations moving forward in this current Reset period need to consider the value of nurturing to their leadership.

The recent emphasis in leadership circles has been on making the workplace more "human," building and nurturing people. This movement results from the high stresses of the Pandemic slowdowns, political and economic uncertainties in the U. S., and the world returning to business in a post-pandemic period of reset.

Many organizations face labor shortages and an unprecedented level of people leaving their job by resignation. Leadership expert Ken Blanchard has coined the term the "Great Resignation."

National records of resignations in the U.S. have been set and broken in May, August, and October. Higher than normal levels of resignation are being seen in Europe and Australia. When one considers that a significant reason for resigning a position is a feeling of not being cared for, respected, or listened to, the need for organizations to recognize the value of Nurturing is obvious.

The key is a leadership shift to nurture the people in their organization. Mark Miller, the Vice president of Leadership development at Chik Fil A, notes Leadership is about building people up and getting things done

" Enriching Women's lives."

Successful, long-term Network Marketers understand and practice building people up and getting things done. They understand how nurturing can grow and sustain their business.

I notice this every Tuesday at my house. My Wife leads a large sales team of independent direct sellers. None of them has quit.; their activity may change from time to time; however, she has record numbers attending virtual meetings every week and working upstairs office during these times. I see /hear the value of nurturing a sales team.

They always seem to laugh, and at times it seems sad, they encourage and challenge each other to be their best Many talks go on with individuals or groups long after the meeting is "over."

What is the difference? Like all successful Network Marketers, my Wife nurtures her team to go as far as they can. Successful Network Marketers understand and value nurturing in all they do. They see the value of nurturing relationships and connections to build people up and get things done. Network Marketers are uniquely positioned to teach, and model is nurturing as an essential business skill for all organizations in 2021.

Network Marketing /Direct Sales is an area women have excelled in and added growth and profitability. This awareness of self and others in relationships and nurturing is referred to as Emotional Intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify our own emotions, and those of others, to self, motivate ourselves, and how to monitor our emotions and those of people around us

The Network Marketer person who can learn skills of discerning and managing" What "I see" and What I Do will significantly enhance their awareness to nurture relationships of a broader base to grow people and their business. Nurturing has at its' base communication.

Jackie Stavros and Cheri Torres, in the second edition of their book Conversations Worth Having written that "the relationship is the conversation."

There is an easy-to-access tool to enhance awareness of yourself and others and positively interact with a wide variety of people. This practical, valuable, and teachable set of skills was first written about 95 years ago.

William Marsten, a Harvard Psychology Professor, wrote The Emotions of Normal People in 1926, describing four styles in all "normal" people. The book was not a best seller and went unnoticed for many years. However, the study of the four personality styles is today the backbone of one of the most common assessments for leaders and followers of their particular style and how to interact with all the different styles of people. This is the D.I.S.C. communication model.

Many versions have been developed and used to support leaders in a wide variety of organizations since the 1980" s. The D.I.S.C. is beneficial to Network Marketers because it understands nurturing and learning can enhance their current nurturing relationships.

There are many versions, many legitimate, some that are not. I will write about the model of D.I.S.C. I use as a certified consultant in Bty The John Maxwell Enterprises in Maxwell Method of D.I.S.C. The Maxwell D.IS.C. Method is a practical functional and scaleable skills assessment designed for a self-assessment of positive strengths and leadership strengths and awareness of how to best interact with other styles.

The thirty-page report provides the awareness of self and other styles and a plethora of practical approaches to enhance how Network Marketer can build their skill set. A brief overview of each of the four styles will be given with significant descriptors in setting up as a party, how the different styles communicate, and the best strategies to communicate with each style. The chart below is an excellent reference to guide learning.

The four styles of the D.I.S.C. model are

1 The "D" Style makes up 3% of the population and is considered a driver or dominant personality style. They are task-oriented. They get things done fast and first. They will get a party set up quickly, missing details at times.

"D" 's are deciders and doers; they don't like routine or details with direction and can be considered abrupt and impulsive. Their greatest fear in relationships is being taken advantage of.

The best communication strategy for a "D" style is built on brief, direct discussion and direction, avoiding wordiness, and building respect.

2 The "I" Style makes up 11% of the population and is considered an influencer or inspirer. They are very people-oriented. They will be the social director or party planner. Hey, like fun or excitement.

"I" 's are excitable, trusting, persuasive, creative problem solvers, and encouragers. I's do tend to be inattentive to detail and follow through and over-talkative. Their biggest fear is to be rejected

The best communication strategy is to take the time to listen and be participative, and stress the excitement of a new project or a sales representation

3 The "S" Style makes up 67% of the population and is considered supportive, stable, and steady. They are very team and people-oriented. They will come early and stay late to help at the party.

"S" tends to be team-oriented and prefers stability and systems in procedure and practice. They do not like quick change or a lack of security.

The best communication strategies for "C" are to explain a change and its benefits in a non-threatening manner long before it happens and follow up on all actions. Keeping "S" styles involved is essential and easy as they love to help.

4 "C: Style makes up 17% of the population and is considered to be cautious and conservative. They are very task,detail-oriented. They will spend hours ordering the Food and Drink order for the party with a little waste and pay the bill quickly and precisely.

"C" s tend to be detail-oriented, questioning, and perfectionistic. They dislike a perceived lack of facts in an explanation and not being respected for their detailed work.

The best communication strategy for an "I" style is to patiently listen to all questions and answer entirely or get back with an answer at a specific time promised.

Any Network Marketer reading the above may have a few questions.

1 I have seen the styles, but I know people who have different styles at different times. These are significant observations. We all have a bit of each style, and in different settings, we may have a different dominant style. Styles can vary from settings and over time in reaction to events. Reputable D.I.S.C. providers have assessments like the Maxwell D.I.S.C. Method, which provides three report graphs of the person's style in different settings.

2 Isn't using Emotional Intelligence enough. The Emotional Intelligence approach provides understanding and awareness with few strategies for a wide variety of styles. A D.I.S.C. approach described by a reputable provider should provide additional awareness, positive strategies, and follow-up for optimum application.

3 Isn't knowing and using these styles manipulative? The answer here is it depends on the intent of the person using the information. A Network Marketer who genuinely cares for those they relate with and embraces a nurturing spirit uses this information to understand their style and other styles to build and grow positive nurturing relationships and connections to build people up to get things done for everyone.

4 Is there enough information here to enhance how I nurture? The clear answer is no. Please research and contact a reputable individual certified as a D.I.S.C. consultant or Coach by a legitimate group like the John Maxwell Team. There are several reputable, certified choices for a D.I.S.C. assessment, such as the Maxwell Method of D.I.S.C. that are upbeat, informative, and have strategies to build on strengths, yours and others.

Network Marketers who understand the power of nurturing and want to enhance their practice of nurturing themselves and others can use the D.I.S.C. method to build their awareness of themselves and others to enhance their skills to work with different styles. This awareness coupled with skills will help you as a Network Marketer enhance the ways you nurture to build people up and get things done.
